classify | to sort objects or ideas into groups according to their similarities |
compare | to show both the similarities and differences between two or more things |
contrast | to show only the differences between two or more things |
criticize | to describe the positive and negative aspects of a subject, then make a judgment about which features are most significant |
define | to give a clear meaning that fits the context or situation |
demonstrate | to show how you arrived at a particular answer |
describe | to use words and details to give a detailed picture of something, including all its important elements or features |
design | to form a plan or an arrangement for a project or response |
develop | to work through an idea step-by-step to reach a goal or clearly defined objective |
discuss | to talk or write about a topic in detail, taking into account different opinions and ideas |
edit | to review writing in draft form and make changes to strengthen word choices, sentences, and paragraphs |
examine | to inspect closely the details of all parts of an idea or text |
explain | to tell why or how something means what it does; to give reasons for something |
evaluate | to analyze an idea in a text and make a judgment on its importance, usefulness, or worth |
graphic organizer | a visual display that demonstrates relationships between facts, concepts, or ideas |
identify | to indicate what something is, particularly by describing its features or characteristics |
illustrate | to give an example in order to explain something or make an idea more understandable |
interpret | to explain the meaning of a text or idea, or to understand a text as having a particular meaning |
justify | to give support or proof when you make a judgment or choice |
organize | to put ideas, facts, or opinions into a purposeful, structured order |
outline | to give a summary of, sometimes by arranging details under headings and subheadings |
persuade | to give convincing details to support a claim |
predict | to use knowledge of a situation, process, or text to make an educated guess about what will happen next |
prove | to use facts or reasons to show that something is true |
relate | to show how ideas or parts are connected to one another |
review | to go over something in detail before making a choice or judgment |
state | to give main points in a logical order |
support | to provide facts, examples, or quotations to back up an idea or opinion |
summarize | to give all main ideas of a text in shortened form, leaving out details and examples |
author's craft | the language and techniques an author uses to create a text; includes literary devices, style, narrative elements |
author's purpose | an author's reason or intent when writing |
conclude | to arrive at a particular judgment or opinion through reasoning |
dialogue | conversations between two or more characters, generally denoted with quotation marks in a text |
objective summary | a short statement that give the main ideas of what a text is about but does not include opinions or irrelevant details |
frequent | repeated; occurring often |
infer | to deduce or conclude something based on reasoning rather than what's stated directly in the text; to "read between the lines" |
