1st Continental Congress 1774-all but GA present. Response to Intolerable Acts. Brought colonies together. Boycott of British goods. Consulted body, redress in grievances shows they did not want independence
Mercantilism Adam Smith-Wealth of Nations. Wealth is power and a country's eco wealth can be measured by the amount of gold/silver in the treasury=more exports than imports. Justified control over the colonies. Caused colonial eco to never fully develope
Quebec Act French allowed to retain Cath religion and old customs. Old boundaries increased. Colonies worried they would sanction colonists' religion as well

Townshend Act 1767-Import duty on glass, white lead, paper, paint and tea. Indirect customs duty payable at ports. Additional tariffs on basic household items. Used to pay British gov salaries
Declaratory Act Reaffirmed Parliament's right to "bind" colonies as seen fit. Absolute, colonies would go to any measure for self sovereignty. Angered colonists
Stamp Act Congress 1765-brought together 27 delegates from 9 colonies. Drew up a statement of rights and grievances. Ignored. Brought together colonies. Eroded sectional preferences-all for one
Navigation Laws 1650-Commerce to and from colonies could only be transported in British vessels. Shot at the Dutch. Certain "enumerated" products could go only to Britain
"Enumerated goods" Could only ship to Britain even if prices were better elsewhere. Positive-Always had a guaranteed market at a profitable price
"Royal Veto" British crown's right to nullify any legistlation passed by colonial assemblies. Usually only if these worked mischief with mercantilist system. Colonists fiercly resented even if it was rarely used
John Hancock Colonial merchant-Smuggling, Prince of Smugglers, "rebel" ringleader.
George Grenville Prime Minister. Aroused the resentment of the colonists in 1763, ordered British navy to strictly enforce the Navigation Acts. Secured Sugar Act. End of Salutary Neglect-colonists pay for military protection
Sugar Act 1764 Direct tax-first tax passed for raising tax revenue in the colonies for the crown. Increase price of sugar imported from West Indies. Part paid for judges and juries
"Virtual Representation" Every member of Parliament represented all British subjects, even colonists. Taxed without representation
