In what year did Massachusetts Bay Colony become Massachusetts? 1691 and included Maine until 1840
What did the New England Way emphasize? Duty, Hard Work, Honesty, and Moderation.
What was the Bible to the Puritans? The only source of truth. Therefore education (being able to read) was highly emphasized
When was the first college in America founded and what was its name? Harvard was established in 1636 for the original purpose of training ministers.
Who were the three challengers to the Puritans? Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and the Quakers.
What did Roger Williams believe and what did he do? He believed in the separation of church and state. Believed that you should worship God in your own way. Never admitted he was wrong. And in 1636 fled Massachusetts and established Rhode Island.
Describe Anne Hutchinson... re-interpreted Sunday messages and shared her own views. Believed you could find inner truth without the ministry. And fled to Rhode Island in 1637
Describe what the Quakers believed and what they did. they began to "quake" when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Each person could know God through an inner-light. They were pacifists.
Describe the New Charter and in what year was it written? It was written in 1691 and stated that governors were appointed by the crown, property ownership determined right to vote, and religious tolerance for anglecans, baptists, and quakers.
What were the three systems of colonial labor? Slavery, Indentured Servitude, and Apprenticeships.
When did the Salem Witch Trials take place and where? they took place in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts
How many people were accused of witchcraft and how many were executed? 200 people were tried and 20 people were executed. Because of this there was a wave of mass hysteria.
Describe Deism... Reason and contemplation of nature could lead one to a knowledge of God. God created the universe, so let him run it. Part of the "Enlightenment" thinking--Age of Reason. Emphasized morality over piety.

What were the results of the Great Awakening? a growth in churches (ex. Baptists--1740=12; 1775= 500), colleges (Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, UPEN), Equality was emphasized, united the colonists.

Who lead British troops in formation through the wilderness? and in what year? General Edward Braddock in 1755. they were ambushed by the Indians and French.
What happened to George Washington during this ambush? He sustained 4 bullet holes in his uniform and had 2 horses shot out from under him.
Who was William Pitt? He was the new British Prime Minister who helped re-energize the British effort which wins them the war.
Describe the Treaty of Paris... 1763, french gave up all land east of the miss. river, spain gave florida to england, spain got all land west of miss river and New Orleans
