9th Science CH18 Waves and Sound
Term | Definition |
---|---|
acoustics | the study of sound |
amplitude | in a wave, the distance from the rest position of the medium to either the crest or trough |
compressional wave | a type of wave where matter vibrates in the same direction as the wave travels |
crest | the highest point of a wave |
frequency | the number of wave crests that pass a point during one second; expressed in hertz (Hz) |
intensity | in sound waves, the amount of energy in each wave; the intensity level of a sound is measured in decibels (dB) |
interference | the ability of two or more waves to combine and form a new wave |
loudness | the human perception of sound intensity |
medium | a material (solid, liquid, gas, or a combination of these) through which a wave travels |
music | sound created using specific pitches, sound quality, and regular patterns |
noise | sound that has no regular pattern or definite pitch |
pitch | the highness or lowness of a sound, which is determined by the frequency of the sound waves |
quality | in sound, the differences among sounds of the same pitch and loudness |
resonance | the tendency of an object to vibrate at the same frequency as another vibrating source |
reverberation | the echoing effect produced by multiple reflections of sound |
transverse wave | a type of wave where the medium moves at right angles to the direction the wave is traveling |
trough | the lowest point of a wave |
ultrasonic technology | technology using high-frequency sound waves for many different purposes such as medical diagnoses, sonar, and jewelry cleaning |
wave | a rhythmic disturbance that carries energy through matter or space |
wavelength | the distance between identical points on two adjacent waves; for example, the distance between two crests or two troughs |
