Explain Rome’s topography (physical features of the land), natural barriers, vegetation, and water access. Fertile plains for crops and hills for protection mild climate river for fresh water meditation sea for transport
Why did the patricians not want a monarchy anymore? What did they do to make a new government? The patricians wanted power so they overthrew the king and established a republic
Explain the difference between patricians and plebeians. The patricians were rich and wealthy they can hold the highest position of government and the plebeians were poor and common people who could vote but could not hold the highest place in the government
Why is the separation of powers so important in a republic? Because if one has to much power than it would be easy for them to get all the power it allows for checks and balances.
What is a tripartite government? A government with three equal branches
Name the three branches of the Roman government and describe the role or function of each branch. Executive 2 consuls led government and commanded army served one year, judicial 8 judges oversaw courts and govern provinces, legislative senate and assemblies advised consuls made laws.
How was Rome’s democracy like the democracy of the United States? They both have a tripartite, republic, majority rules, emphasis on civic duty
What is a civic duty? Give an example. Civic duty is what citizens are expected to do to contribute to their country have responsibilities to their government jury duty, taxes, voting, military service.
What is a limited government? Who has the power in a limited government? In a limited government people only have power because people give it to them by the people. They can't make laws without the people's approval.
What is a legal code? Why is it important? What was Rome’s called? What is it called in the United States? Romes was called the 12 tables in the U.S its called the constitution. The legal code limits the power of the government in writing
What event more than any other moved Rome from a republic to an empire? Julius Caesar was dictator for life assassinated followed by civil war.
How did the Roman government try to solve the problems of city life? Grain for the poor, sewer systems, aqueducts with fresh water, entertainment/sport
What was Emperor Augustus known for? He was known for rebuilding and beautifying Rome, restored the appearance of the republic(kept control) began pax Ramona
Describe three reasons for the end of the Roman Empire. They had too many slaves so there are not enough jobs, divisions between the rich and poor, decline in agriculture, and a decline in civic duty
What are minority rights? Give an example that applies to Ancient Rome. Do those in minority and not in power have rights women in Rome did not
