Substance Abuse

Abuse Excessive use of a substance that differs from societal norms.
Dependence Occurs when user must take usual dose of substance.
Addiction A chronic but treatable brain disorder in which people lose the ability to control their need for alcohol or other drugs.
Abstinence The total avoidance of an activity.
Habituation Occurs when user depends on substance.
Substance use Ingesting any chemical that alters the CNS.
How Amphetamines work Initiates HPA axis. Excessive use leads to psychosis- paranoia, hallucination, repetitive behavior, delusions.
How Cocaine works Intiates HPA axis. Prolonged usuage- Depression, anxiety, delusions, and hallucinations.
Alcohol Profile of the substance- Ethanol, EtOH
Phase I (Pre-Alcoholic phase) Social drinking or to relieve tension or stress.
Phase II (Prodromal/early warning phase) Secretive about inceasing alcohol intake; drinks alone; preoccupies with obraining alcohol.
Phase III (Crucial phase) Blackouts occur; attempts to go "on the wagon"; physical & social chages; may be hospitalized.
Phase IV (Chronic phase) Drinking bouts for days; drinking takes priority; medial complications devastating; death may occur.
Withdrawl symptoms of Alcohol Begins within 4-12 hours of last drink. Stage 1, stage 2 (DTs). Complete in 5-7 days after withdrawal begns.
Codependency Preoccupation with another person's behavior and feeling unnecessarily guilty when not taking care of the other person's needs. Often coexist with substance abusers.
