The West Secondary Activities

Infrastructure Lacks investment, development is difficult and expensive, one motorway (M6 Galway-Dublin), lack of routes a deterrent to industry, transport of goods is expensive and slow.
Lack of routes isolates in from the East and EU markets .
Ireland West Airport in Knock has only a small number of flights, providing little incentive to companies to locate there
Telecommunications are limited, which is a deterrent to any modern businesses as they rely on high broadband speeds
Lacks industrial estates which are the preferred locations for MNC's. As they tend to locate on the outskirts of urban ares on road links the West is not suitable
Labour Force Low population density of 25 perkm2. Only 30% live in urband areas.
Galway city is the largest urban centre with a population of 70'000
The West has only one university and two institute of technologys. Two are these are in Galway City. This attracts MNC's to the region because they can carry out research develpment
They provide a skilled workforce. MNC's can invest in college courses and fund PhD research .
