Kansas Becomes a State

Why did many African American men join the military? There was a lack of other jobs available, former slaves had few skills, and they could receive the same pay as white soldiers.
What was the name of the all black regiment of soldiers created by James Lane? The First Colored Infantry
What battle made the First Colored Infantry famous? The battle of Honey Springs
Who led the attack on Lawrence in 1863? William Quantrill
What happened during Quantrill's raid on Lawrence? Over 300 Confederate guerrillas rode into Lawrence with a surprise attack, shooting every man and boy in sight. Unarmed civilians were shot, businesses looted, and buildings burned. At least 140 citizens of Lawrence were killed.
What was order No. 11? An order for citizens living in 4 Missouri counties near the Kansas border to evacuate their homes. This was to prevent any further raids into Kansas.
What was the only major Civil War battle fought in Kansas? The Battle of Mine Creek
Who was General Sterling Price? He led Confederate troops at the Battle of Mine Creek.
What was the Union Army's key to victory at the Battle of Mine Creek? Better weapons and they used a cavalry charge.
What was 2 jobs of frontier forts in Kansas? To keep whites off Indian land, to keep the peace between the tribes and white settlers on the trails, to protect mail and stagecoach routes, to protect people and cargo on the Santa Fe Trail.
What fort is the oldest continuously operating fort west of the Mississippi River? Fort Leavenworth
Who were Black Kettle and White Antelope? Indian Chiefs who went to Washington, DC to work for peace.
What was the Sand Creek Massacre? Soldiers attacked a Cheyenne camp killing more than 150 Indian men, women, and children. The Indians were led to believe they would be safe but were betrayed. They were attacked even though they were flying the American flag and white flag of peace.
How did the Sand Creed Massacre affect relations between the U.S. government and native tribes? It was difficult for the Indians to trust the Americans again.
What was the purpose of the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty? To end the conflict on the frontier by moving native tribes to reservations.
What did the government promise to tribes if they moved to reservations? Food, to build them schools, farming equipment, and protection from whites.
Who were the buffalo soldiers? African -American soldiers who served in the 9th and 10th cavalry units.
