Language Arts Terms

Basic Terms for 8th grade LA

QuestionAnswer
Setting a purpose for your reading Your reason to read a text. You set a purpose by asking yourself a question that will guide your reading.
Connecting to your reading Relating to the text either through past experiences, something you have heard or seen that relates to the reading, giving your opinion of the reading, or showing your thinking of the reading.
expository text Text type that explains something.
narrative text Text type that tells a story.
persuasive text Text type that attempts to make you see another perspective or a different point of view.
technical text Text type that usually give directions often in the form of steps. EX: recipes, directions, manuals
text structures How a text is organized. EX: problem/solution, cause/effect, sequence, compare/contrast, description.
text features The features or qualities of a text. EX: sidebars, table of contents, pictures/illustrations, captions, subtitles, titles, bold text, italics, etc.
