How many nurses need to hear a telephone order? | it has to be 2 people for a telephone order example; it could be a RN and clinical educator. |
When must the doctor sign the telephone order? | the doctor has to to sign a telephone order within 24 hours |
What does mane mean? | morning |
What does bd mean? | twice a day |
What does QID mean? | 4 times a day |

What do you do if a patient refuses to take a medication? | you could educate them on the importance of taking the medication. ask them why they are refusing to take their medication and document in the drug chart that they have refused. |
What factors affect absorption of a drug? | poor nutritional status, diseases, other medications, age, body size, gender, liver issues. |
What does PV mean? | per vaginal |

What is first pass metabolism? | First pass metabolism can occur in the gut and the liver. For example, first pass metabolism occurs in the gut for benzylpenicillin and insulin and in the liver for propranolol, lignocane, chloromethiasole and GTN |
Why must drug therapy be carefully monitored in the young and the elderly? | because they metabolise medication at different rates |
What does ‘top’ mean? | topical |
What is meant by drug tolerance? | how your body metabolizes the medication. |
How should an S8 be stored? | in a safe attached to the wall, in a locked room |
What is the half life of a drug? | its the amount of time required for 50% of the drug to be metabolized but every drug has a different half life. |
What is meant by onset of action? | its the time taken for the drug to take affect. |
What is an Antagonist? | a drug that combines to the particular site blocking the receptors from activating |
What is an Agonist? | a drug that binds to a site and activates the receptors. |
Where do you administer a sublingual medication? | you would administer a sublingual medication under the tongue. |
Why might a medication be administered sublingually? | if a person cant swallow and because its faster absorption and acts quickly they help in emergency situations |
What does IV mean? | Intra Venous |
How often do we give a TDS medication? | every 8 hours |
