1st Colonies
The New England, Middle, and Southern colonies

Maryland- | founded for profit from land sale and religious and political freedom. Leaders were Lord Baltimore and George Calvert |
Virginia- | founded for trade and farming and its leader was John Smith |
North Carolina- | founded for trade and farming and its leader was a group of eight proprietors |

Georgia- | founded for profit, a home for debtors, and a buffer against Spanish Florida. Its leader was James Oglethorpe |
King Philip- | also known as Metacom the chief of the Wampanoag, he led opponents of English in King Philip’s war trying to stop puritan expansion |
John Wheelright- | forced to leave Massachusetts because he questioned some of the puritan teachings; he and some followers moved to New Hampshire and founded the town of Exeter |
Anne Hutchinson- | questioned some of the puritan teachings and was expelled from Massachusetts, helped establish Rhode Island |
Roger Williams- | a minister of a small church in Salem, was forced to leave Massachusetts bay so he moved to present day Rhode Island where he bought land from native Americans and founded the town of providence |
Tomas Hooker- | disagreed some of the Puritan leaders, left Massachusetts with followers and founded Hartford Connecticut |
William Penn- | a Quaker who had King Charles II give him a charter in North America to create a land safe for Quakers, founded Pennsylvania and wrote the government, the frame of government |
Lord Baltimore- | also known as Cecil Calvert, became proprietor of Maryland when George Calvert died, he got the assembly to pass the act of toleration but he act didn’t support those who were not Christian |
John Smith- | Saved Jamestown the first English settlement in Virginia |
James Oglethorpe- | a leader of Georgia, wanted to keep the Spanish in Florida and create a colony where debtors could work off there debt |
Toleration- | recognition that other people have the right to different opinions |
Town meeting- | an assembly of townspeople that decide local issues |
Debtors- | people who owe money |
Plantations- | A large farm that was the most important feature of life along the southern colonies |
Royal colony- | a colony controlled directly by the English king |
Proprietary colony- | a colony created by a grant of land from a monarch to an individual or family |
Act of toleration- | it welcomed all Christians and gave male Christians the right to vote and hold office |
Mason Dixon line- | A line to divide the middle colonies from the southern and eventually became a line between slavery colies and free |
Puritans- | wanted to get away from the Church of England so they sailed to Massachusetts Bay |
Quaker- | believed all people were equal under God |
Frame of government- | Pennsylvania’s government |
New Jersey- | founded when the southern part of New York broke off |
Delaware- | originally part of Penn’s charter for Pennsylvania |
New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut- | New England colonies |
New England colonies- | didn’t do a lot of farming but had a lot of fish with long snowy winters and short warm summers |
New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware- | Middle Colonies |
Middle Colonies- | had lowlands and the soil was good for farming |
Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, and North & South Carolina- | Southern Colonies |
Southern Colonies- | warm and humid with long growing seasons, grew large amounts of rice and tobacco |
Tidewater region- | swampy area good fro growing rice and tobacco |

King Philip’s war- | King Philip led opponents of the English to try to stop Puritan expansion but failed because he died and no one took over |
Salem Witch trials- | a time in Salem when many innocent people were accused of witch craft and many killed |
New York- | started as a Dutch colony called New Netherlands and was very profitable from fur trade |
Pennsylvania- | also known as the bread basket |
Rhode Island- | believed in religious tolerance |
Massachusetts- | didn’t believe in religious tolerance because of the puritans |
Massachusetts Bay- | Founded by John Winthrop who led puritans to North America. |
Bacon’s Rebellion- | Virginia tobacco planter bought most of the good farmland near the coast leaving poor colonists without land and the right to vote. Fighting broke out between the natives and the poor colonists because the colonists tried to move inland |
Penn’s holy experiment- | William Penn considered his colony a “holy experiment” because he created a colony in which people from different religions could live peacefully |
Backcountry- | a frontier region extending through several colonies from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Pennsylvania Dutch were from the backcountry. |
New Jersey- | originally a proprietary colony then turned into a royal colony |
New Amsterdam- | the capital of New Netherlands |
population in Virgina- | the first people were menand as women came, the white population grew and the natives population decresed because of dieses and being killed |
Nathaniel Bacon- | a big part of Bacon's rebellion and was from virginia |
Georgia- | no one could be catholic or drink bc they needed to be alert and they didnt want something in common with the spanish, slavery was legal in georgia later on |
Government in Bacon's rebellion- | didn't help any because they didn't want to start anything with the natives bc they traded with them |

Geroge calvert- | recieved the charter for Maryland and he built maryland for catholics |
