Gilded Age Vocab

TermDefinition
Standard Oil Company An American oil producing, transporting, refining, marketing company, and monopoly. Established in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler as a corporation in Ohio, it was the largest oil refinery in the world of its time.
Monopoly The exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.
Trust an arrangement whereby a person (a trustee) holds property as its nominal owner for the good of one or more beneficiaries.
Social Darwinism The theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals.
Nativism the policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants.
Old Immigration Immigrants arrived in the mid-1800s, coming mostly from northwestern Europe
New Immigration Immigrants arrived a generation later, traveling mostly from southeastern Europe.
