Biliary System

TermDefinition
gallbladder bile resivor on the posterioinferior surface of the liver. Fundus, body and neck. the fundus is the bottom of the pouch and the neck leads to the cystic duct
Bile Ducts drain the liver of bile
Gallbladder fossa indentation located on the posterioinferior portion of the right of the liver where the gallbladder is situated
intrahepatic completely or partially enclosed in liver tissue
Hilum indention, depression, or pit on an organ forming a doorway or area of enterance and exit for vessels, ducts and nerves
porta hepatis also know as the liver hilum or doorway giving entrance and exit to hepatic vessels, ducts and nerves
common duct (CD)/Biliary duct formed by the union of the right and left intrahepatic ducts. serves to transport bile from approximately the level of the liver hilum, inferior to the GB and duodenum to to assist digestion. its proximal portion is called the common hepatic duct
common hepatic duct (CHD) transports bile inferiorly to the cystic duct that directs the flow of bile it receives directly into the GB. continues inferiorly as the distal portion of the common duct known as the common bile duct
cystic duct directs the flow of bile it receives from the common hepatic duct directly into the neck of the gallbladder
common bile duct (CBD) distal portion of the biliary duct. transports bile from the level of the cystic duct, inferiomedially toward the head of the pancreas, and then enters the duodenum and empties the bile to aid in digestion
supraduodenal common bile duct portion of the common bile duct superior to the duodenum
retroduodenal common bile duct portion of the common bile duct that runs behind the duodenum
infraduodenal common bile duct portion of the common bile duct inferior to the duodenum
intraduodenal common bile duct portion of the common bile duct within the duodenum
ampulla of vater (hepatopancreatic ampulla) opening formed by the common bile duct and pancreatic duct as the enter the duodenum, where they empty bile and pancreatic enzymes that assist in the digestive process
sphincter of oddi (oddi's muscle) a muscle sheath surrounding the CBD at the ampulla of vater. aids in regulating bile flow into the duodenum
cholecystitis inflammation of the gallbladder. presents sonographically with thickened GB walls
cholecystectomy surgical removal of GB
proper hepatic artery branch of the common hepatic artery, supplies the GB and liver
hepatic portal system system responsible for venous drainage of the gastrointestional tract, including the spleen, pancreas and GB. blood is conveyed from these organs via the portal vein to the liver
portal vein the gateway through which blood returning from the gastrointestional tract and accessory organs passes before returning to the heart.
fundus refers to the inferior, widest portion of the GB
body refers to the middle and main portion of the GB
neck refers to the narrow portion of the GB that is connected to the cystic duct
portal triads intrahepatic bile ducts run alongside portal veins and hepatic arteries in a portal triad, surrounded by connective tissue and radiating through the lobes and segments of the liver.
extrahepatic outside of or not enclosed by liver tissue
hepatic ducts (right, left) right and left intrahepatic ducts that direct the bile produced in the liver to the biliary duct. the duct joins at approximately the level of the liver hilum to form the biliary duct or CBD
spiral valves of heister a series of mucosal folds in within the lumen of the cystic duct
cholecystokinin (CCK) peptide hormone that stimulates the the gallbladder to contract and the sphincter of oddi to relax and increases hepatic production of bile. and injectable form can be used to stimulate the GB during sonographic examination for a type of function test
bilirubin a bile pigment. green when oxidized.
polyps protruding growth or mass from a mucus membrane
hartmann's pouch a small sacculation (outpouching) in the area of the gallbladder neck. named after henri hartmann, a french surgeon. the term infundibulum is also applied to this sacculation, which some consider an abnormality and others consider just an oddity.
cholelithiasis formation or presence of gallstones, which are calcifications in the GB or biliary duct.
choledocholithiasis presence of gallstones in the biliary tractcholch
choledochal (or choledochus) cyst normal, localized dialation of the common bile duct
