DB Ch3 The Biosphere

Vocabulary for Ch 3 in Miller and Levine Biology

QuestionAnswer
Ecology The study of the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment.
Biosphere Part of Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air.
Species A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Population A group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area.
Community All of the organisms that live together in a defined area.
Ecosystem All of the organisms that live in a particular place, and the non-living environment in which they live.
Biome A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and dominant communities.
Autotroph (Producer) An organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food from inorganic compounds (carbohydrates).
Photosynthesis The process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy and inorganic molecules to produce carbohydrates.
Chemosynthesis The process by which some organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates.
Heterotroph (Consumer) An organism that obtains energy from the food it consumes.
Herbivore An organism that obtains energy by eating only plants.
Carnivore An organism that obtains energy by eating only animals.
Omnivore An organism that obtains energy by eating both plants and animals.
Detritivore Organism that feeds on the waste of other organisms.
Decomposer Organism that breaks down and obtains energy from dead organic matter.
Food Chain A series of steps in an ecosystem in which energy is transfered from one organism to another by one eating the other.
Food Web A network of feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem.
Trophic Level A step in a food chain or food web.
Ecological Pyramid Diagram showing the relative amounts of energy or matter within each trophic level.
Biomass Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level.
Biogeochemical Cycle Process in which chemical compounds are passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another.
Evaporation The process by which water changes from a liquid into a gas.
Transpiration The loss of water from a plant through its leaves.
Nutrient Chemical substance that an organism requires to live.
Nitrogen Fixation The process of converting nitrogen gas into ammonia.
Denitrification The process of converting nitrates into nitrogen gas.
Primary Productivity The rate at which organic matter is created by producers in an ecosystem.
Limiting Nutrient Single nutrient that either is scarce or cycles very slowly, limiting the growth of organisms in an ecosystem.
Algal Bloom An immediate increase in the amount of algae and other producers that results from a large input of a limiting nutrient.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
