What are four types of substances transported in the blood? Gases, nutrients, waste, and hormones.
What is the pH range of the blood? 7.35-7.45
What are the two main components of blood? the liquid portion, plasma and the formed elements, which include the cells and cell fragments.
Next to water, what is the most abundant type of substance in plasma? Protein
Where do blood cells form? Red bone marrow.
What type of cell gives rise to all blood cells? Hematopoietic stem cells.
What is the main function of hemoglobin? Carry oxygen in the blood.
What are the three types of granular leukocytes? What are the two type of agranular leukocytes? Granular- Neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils. Agranular- lymphocytes and monocytes.
What is the most important function of leukocytes? Destroy pathogens. They also remove other foreign material and cellular debris.
What is the function of blood platelets? Blood clotting, coagulation
What is the general term for the process that stops blood loss? Hemostasis
What substance in the blood forms a clot? Fibrin
How does serum differ from blood plasma? Serum does not contain clotting factors; plasma does.
What is the term for any substance that activates an immune response? An antigen
What are the four ABO blood types? A, B, AB, O
What blood factor is associated with incompatibility during pregnancy? Rh factor.
How is blood commonly separated into its component parts? Centrifuge
What is anemia? an abnormally low level of red cells or hemoglobin in the blood.
What is leukemia? a cancer of the tissues that produce white cells, resulting in an excess number of incompetent leukocytes in the blood.
What blood components are low in cases of thrombocytopenia? Platelets
What test measures the relative volume of red cells in blood? Hematocrit
What are two ways of expressing hemoglobin level? grams per deciliter (dL) of whole blood or as a percentage of a given standard, usually the average male normal of 15.6 grams hemoglobin per deciliter.
