acquired immunodeficiency | chronic infectious disease caused by HIV virus, which destroys helper T-lymphocytes, causing loss of immune response |
allergen | an antigen that can initiate an allergic reaction |
anaphylaxis | a life threatening systemic allergic or hypersensitivity reaction, with respiratory obstruction and decreased blood pressure |
antibiotics | a substance derived from microorganisms that is used to treat infections |
antimicrobial | an agent that kills or inhibits growth and reproduction of microorganisms. |
antiviral | An agent that kills a virus or that suppresses its ability to replicate and, hence, inhibits its capability to multiply and reproduce |
autoantibodies | antibodies to self-antigens such as cells or DNA |
bronchoconstriction | contraction of smooth muscle in the bronchioles, narrowing the airways. |
colostrum | the first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth, rich in antibodies. |
complement | a series of inactive proteins circulating in the blood, when activated they can destroy bacteria or antigens. |
cytoxic | any agent or process that kills cells |
fetus | the human child in utero between 8 weeks and birth |
glycoprotein | a combination of protein and carbohydrates |
hypogammaglobulinemia | a problem with the immune system in which not enough gamma globulins are produced in the blood. |
hypoproteinemia | abnormally low level of plasma protein in the blood |
mast cells | located in the tissues, they release chemical such as histamine, heparin, and bradykinin , in response to injury or foreign material. |
monocytes | the largest of all white blood cells and play an important role in the defense against germs and in inflammation |
mononuclear phagocytic system | part of the immune system that consists of the phagocytic cells located in reticular connective tissue. |
mutate | any alteration in the inherited nucleic acid sequence of the genotype of an organism |
polymerase chain reaction | a method to analyze a short sequence of DNA (or RNA) even in samples containing only minute quantities of DNA or RNA |
placenta | A membranous vascular organ that develops in female eutherian mammals during pregnancy, lining the uterine wall and partially enveloping the fetus, to which it is attached by the umbilical cord. |
prophylactic | a measure or drug to prevent disease |
pruritic | itching sensation |
replication | the process by which DNA makes a copy of itself during cell division |
retrovirus | a virus containing RNA and the enzyme reverse transcriptase required to convert RNA to DNA that is then integrated with host cell DNA |
splenectomy | removal o the spleen |
stem cells | a basic cell that may divide to give rise to a variety of specialized cells |
thymus | a lymphoid organ situated in the neck of vertebrates that produces T cells for the immune system |
titer | a test that detects the presence and measures the amount of antibodies within a person’s blood |
vescles | small thin-wall sacs containing fluid, for example a blister. |
