QuestionAnswer
Middle ear consist of malleus, Incus, Stapes
Functions of the middle ear conduct sound vibrations from outer to inner ear, protect inner ear by reducing amplified loud sounds, eustachian tube equalized atmospheric pressure
Inner ear contains semicircular canals, cochlea, distal end of 8th cranial nerve, maintains balance or equilibrium
Conductive hearing loss caused by any physical obstruction to the transmission of sound waves
sensorineural hearing loss caused by a defect in the cochlea, 8th cranial nerve, or the brain itself
Weber's test tuning fork on clients head, midline forehead or upper lip over teeth. normal hearing is in both ears. if heard louder in 1 ear =conductive hearing loss/lower in other ear= sensorineural loss
Rinne's test compares air conduction and bone conduction, air conduction 2-3x longer, fork is placed on mastoid process say when you stop hearing fork, then put by ear-should still hear it by ear
otosclerosis disease of the labryinathe capsule of middle ear, resulting in bony overgrowth of tissue, causes growth of new bone formation.
stapes fixation leads to conductive hearing loss in otosclerosis
if otosclerosis is in inner ear sensorineural hearing loss is present
fenestration removal of stapes, with small hole drilled in footplate, a prosthesis connected btween incus and footplate, complications= vertigo, infection,, facial nerve damage
meniere's disease endolymphatic hydrops, dilation of the endolymphatic system by overproduction or decreased reabsorption of endolymphatic fluid
Meneire's disese characterized by tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo, feelings of fullness in the ear, N&V, nystagmus
Schwartze's sign pinkish discoloration of the tympanic membarane which indicates vascular changes in the ear. found in otosclerosis
