Gilded Age Many immigrants/laborers worked in poverty for a few rich industrialists (factories)
Laissez-Faire "Allow to Be". Gov't. should play a limited role in business. Should not get involved.
Blue Laws Laws that restricted immoral activity
Subsidy Payment by the gov't. to develop railroads
Spoils System The gov't provides jobs and subsidies (favors) for people. The people support the gov't.
Civil Service The gov't workers that are not elected....have their jobs because of favors. Rutherford B. Hayes fought the spoils system and fires many people given jobs by favors.
Steerage Large area uder the ship's deck where immigrants were forced to travel
Tenement Narrow rows of low cost apartment buildings
Settlement House A "community center" - house - to provide social services by volunteers
Political Machine A unofficial city organiation that exchanged favors for votes. The city leaders (policie, fire fighers, transportation, garbage managers) gave people jobs, if people voted for them
Graft The gov't leaders (police, fire fighters, garbage managers) would use their *job to get *money. People would pay them in exchange for favors. This money was feeding the "political machine"
Nativism To favor native born Americans and restrict immigration. Started by a secret society.
Prohibition To prohibit alcohol
Temperance movement A campaign to eliminate drinking and alcohol.
