What were cattle drives? | Cattle drives moved longhorn cattle (they were sturdy and able to travel long distances) to railroad stations where they would be sent East to meet the high demand of beef. |
What was the Homestead Act? | It provided land for settlers if they lived on the land for 5 years and improved the land; it caused many settlers to move west in hopes of new opportunity; in Oklahoma it caused rushes to claim land. |
What was the goal of the U.S. government in the Indian Wars? | to send Indians to reservations (unfortunately many reservations were on dry, barren land that was impossible to farm or sustain animal life) |
How was Hawaii added to the U.S.? | Hawaii was annexed as the 50th state after it maintained an independence for a short time. |
Define imperialism. | The extension of power or control over another nation. |
What was "Seward's Folly"? | The name given to the purchase of Alaska from Russia by Secretary of State Seward because most people felt it was a mistake. However, after gold and oil were discovered, it became a bargain! Alaska was the 49th state! |
How did barbed wire affect settlement in the West? | Since farmers did not have trees to build fences, the invention of barbed wire provided settlers a way to fence in their land. This helped the decline of cattle drives because of the limitation of open ranges. |
What was the main mode of transportation used in settling the West? | the Railroad |
What was the Boxer Rebellion? | The Boxers were a group of radicals that were against any Western influences in China; the radicals eventually gained support from the Chinese government and led attacks; international military support intervened. |
What was the Treaty of Washington? | It provided British compensation for commerce raiders; it negotiated fishing rights in the Pacific Northwest; and it determined ownership of islands near Vancouver. Overall, it mended relationships with both Britain and Canada. |
What is Yellow Journalism and what was its impact on the Spanish-American War? | It's sensationalized journalism to increase profits/readers; it persuaded the American public to be pro-war even though the facts did not support a necessary war. |

What was France's involvement in Mexico? | Napolean installed Maximilian I (an Austrian) as the king in Mexico. Eventually, Mexicans revolted and eventually assassinated Maximilian I! |
What was the USS Maine's involvement in the Spanish-American War? | The USS Maine docked in Cuba with the increasing tension in the region. After it exploded, many blamed the Spanish which led to a declaration of war. To this day, it has not been determined if it was a mine or an accident in the coal room. |

What is significant about Promontory Point, Utah? | It was the meeting place of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroad lines that connected the East and the West; the meeting point of the first transcontinental railroad. |
What is Pan-Americanism? | The focus on establishing trade between the Americas rather than with European nations; however, many Latin American nations opposed the idea because they feared U.S. domination. |
