Homestead Act Gave American citizens 160 acres in the Great Plains for $10, must live on for 3-5 years to own...this led to the development of western land
Morrill Land Grant Act gave land to states to set up Agricultural and Engineering Colleges
Dawes Act Gave land to Native Americans in the Great Plains for farming, 160 acres, an attempt to change their way of life
Exodusters Freedmen (African American) who migrated to Kansas and took advantage of the Homestead Act
Assimilation The attempt to change a group's culture and traditions
Reservations Areas in the west where Native American tribes would be moved and forced to live, chosen mostly by the US Government
Mining, Farming, Ranching, Building the Transcontinental Railroad types of economic opportunities available in the late 1800s for individuals moving west
Barbed wire New way to fence in animals for protection in the west, also led to the end of open range cattle farming
Transcontinental Railroad Built to connect the country together, made exchange of goods faster, developed towns and led to railroad monopolies and corruption
