Parts of a Typical Synagogue

Torah | The Torah is the first five books of laws and stories in the Hebrew Bible. They provide the teachings and guidance to Jewish followers. |
Menorah | The oldest symbol of the Jewish faith. It represents the light of God and the mission of the Jewish people to live a holy life and inspire others to do the same. |
Ark | A special cupboard that holds the Torah scrolls. The Ark always faces toward Jerusalem. |
Bimah | The reading desk where prayers are said and Jewish law is read. |
Pews | The bench seats where worshippers sit. They are arranged so that all worshippers face the Ark. |
Ner Tamid | The Eternal Light that hangs above the Ark. It is always lit and represents God's eternal presence. |
10 Commandments | A list of religious precepts (rules) that were said to be revealed by God to Moses on Mt. Sinai. They are central to both Judaism and Christianity. |
Star of David | This symbol represents King David, the first king of Jerusalem. |
