Continent Ostomy | surgically created opening in which liquid stool or urine is removed by siphoning. |
Defecation | bowel elimination. |
Diarrhea | urgent passage of watery stools. |
Enema | introduction to a solution into the rectum. |
Enterostomal Therapist | a nurse certified in caring for ostomies and related skin problems. |
Excoriation | chemical skin injury. |
Fecal Impaction | condition in which it is impossible to pass feces voluntarily. |
Fecal Incontinence | inability to control the elimination of stool. |
Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) | self-collected screening test for colorectal disorders to detect heme, an iron compound in blood within stool. |
Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) | alternative to FOBT, more specific than an FOBT because it uses antibodies to detect globin, a protein removed from heme, which is present exclusively in the lower intestine. |

Flatulence | an excessive accumulation of intestinal gas. |
Flatus | an excessive accumulation of intestinal gas. |
Gastrocolic Reflex | increased peristaltic activity. |

Retention Enema | solution held temporarily in the large intestine. |
Sigmoidoscopy | visual endoscopic inspection limited to the sigmoid portion of the large intestine. |
Stoma | entrance to a surgically created opening. |
Suppository | medicated oval- or cone shaped mass. |
Valsalva Maneuver | act of closing the glottis and contracting the pelvic and abdominal muscles to increase abdominal pressure. |
