TermDefinition
Enamel Tufts : A developmental defect in enamel filled organic material. Located in DEJ. They form between groups of enamel rods. When dentin and enamel is scalloped; tuft often arise from the scalloped peaks.
Enamel Spindles : Arise at the DEJ and extend into enamel. Are finger like spindles and look different compared to the tufts. Enamel spindles at the DEJ are extensions of dental tubules that may contain odontoblastic processes in the enamel, Are found singularly/ group.
Hunter-Schreger bands : The enamel rod configuration when viewed in incidental light appear as light and dark band of rod groups. A repeating pattern can be seen along the long axis of the tooth and extend through one- half to two- thirds of the thickness of the enamel
Line of Retzius : Are incremental lines are the result of the rhythmic recurrent deposit of enamel. When the enamel matrix mineralizes; it follows a pattern. The lines are accentuated because of the variation in the mineral deposited at the point of enamel hesitation.
Enamelin : The protein enamelin is the organic compound of enamel. It is distributed on the crystal aids enamel in its permeability.
Enamel lamellae : Are cracks in the surface of the enamel visible to the naked eye. They appear leaf like and are possible avenues for caries. Form during development of enamel. Other causes may be from stress, impact, or rapid temperature change.
Imbrication lines : Are ridges on the enamel surface of the crown; they are more noticeable on the facial surface of the tooth near the cervical region. They are most noticeable on the maxillary central incisor
Gnarled Enamel : When rods bend in an exaggerated twisted manner at the cusp tips.
