dawn phenomenon | a situation in which an individual's blood glucose level upon waking is higher than that before going to bed in the evening |
diabetes mellitus | a disorder of the body's metabolism of protein, fats, and carbohydrates because of an absolute lack of insulin or insulin resistance |
endocrine pancreas | an organ that secretes hormones, such as insulin and glucagon |
glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) | a blood test that depicts hemoglobin and red blood cell exposure to glucose over the previous 3 to 4 months. |
hyperglycemia | refers to high levels of sugar, or glucose, in the blood. |
hyperketonemia | a condition of elevated circulating ketones that results from s loss of insulin, which is an inhibitor of lypolysis |
hypoglycemia | low blood glucose levels |
insulin | an anabolic hormone |
intermittent claudication | a condition of fatigue or aching in the leg muscles even when walking .short distances. |
islets of Langerhans | clusters of cells, located throughout the pancres, that are responsible for the secretion of hormones. |
ketoacidosis | a state of metabolic acidosis, which signifies tht the body is acccessing fat and protein sources for energy and is releasing ketones, which are highly acidic, in process |
Kussmaul respirations | deep, rapid respirations that present as a compensatory measure to release excess acids through the lungs and into the atomosphere. |
nephropathy | a problem of degenerative changes in small vessels in the kidneys |
neuropathy | a problem of nerve degeneration to damage to cell body resulting in delayed nerve conduction impaired sensory function |
nocturia | frequent urination at night |
polydipsia | a stae of excessive thirst |
polyphagia | a state of excessive hunger |
polyuria | frequent, large volume urination |
retinopathy | a problem of degenerative changes in small vessels of the retina (eyes). |
Somogyi effect | the presence of rebound hyperglycemia as a reaction to insulin induced hypoglycemia. |
