Neoplasia
Oral manifestations
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Anaplastic | Characterized by a loss of differentiation of cells and their orientation to one another; a characteristic of malignant tumors. |
Benign | A condition that, if untreated or with symptomatic therapy, will NOT become life threatening. |
Carcinoma | Malignant tumor of epithelium |
Dysplasia | Disordered growth; alteration in size, shape, and organization of adult cells. |
Encapsulated | Surrounded by a capsule of fibrous connective tissue. |
Hyperplasia | Abnormal increase in the number of cells in an organ or tissue. |
Leukoplakia | Clinical term used to identify a white, plaquelike lesion of the oral mucosa that cannot be wiped off or diagnosed as any other disease. |
Malignant | Resistant to treatment; able to metastasize and kill the host; describing cancer. |
Metastasis | Transport of neoplastic cells to parts of the body remote from the primary tumor and the establishment of new tumors at those sites. |
Metastatic Tumor | Tumor formed by cells that have been transported from the primary tumor to sites not connected with the original tumor. |
Neoplasia | New growth; the formation of tumors by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells. |
Neoplastic | Pertaining to the formation of tumors by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells. |
Neoplasm Tumor | a new growth of tissue in which growth is uncontrolled and progressive. |
Nevus | Circumscribed malformation of the skin or oral mucosa presumed to be of hereditary origin; also, a benign tumor of melanocytes (nevus cells) |
Peripheral | Occurring outside of bone. |
Pleomorphic | Occurring in various forms. |
Primary Tumor | Original tumor; the source of metastasis. |
Sarcoma | Malignant tumor of connective tissue. |
Tumor | Neoplasm or a swelling or enlargement. |
Undifferentiated | Absence of normal differentiation; anaplasia; a characteristic of some malignant tumors. |
Lipoma | A benign tumor of fat. |
Osteoma | A benign tumor of bone. |
Squamous cell carcinoma, or an epidermoid carcinoma | A malignant tumor of squamous epithelium. |
Osteosarcoma (osteogenic sarcoma) | A malignant tumor of bone. |
Characteristics of benign tumors | Well differentiated, slow growth, mitotic figures rare, usually encapsulated, no metastasis. |
Characteristics of malignant tumors | Well differentiated to anaplastic, slow to rapid growth, mitotic figures may be numerous, invasive and unencapsulated, metastasis likely. |
Three different types of epithelial tumors of the oral cavity are: | 1.squamous epithelium 2. salivary gland epithelium 3. odontogenic epithelium |
Papilloma | A benign tumor of squamous epithelium that presents as a small, exophytic, pedunculated or sessile growth. Most cases found on soft palate or tongue, can affect either sex - any age. |
