Reading skills

Skills necessary for international exams like PET, FCE, etc.

TermDefinition
Gist reading or Skimming: to get the general idea of a reading, such in reading articles to see which one is interesting to you.
Inference or inferring meaning: to understand the author’s attitude or mood behind the actual words, such in the review of a movie to see if the author recommends it or not.
Understanding attitude or opinion: reading a text to find the real meaning behind a writer’s words.
Detailed reading: reading a text carefully to understand almost every word of it, such in to find out the difference between two DVD players functionality.
Scanning reading: to get specific pieces of information, such in when you want to know the timetable of a train to London.
Understanding the purpose in other sources of reading: route signs, text messages, signs in a window. The idea is to know the purpose of such sources of reading.
Prediction: saying what you think about the context of the text before reading.
