Using existing knowledge to understand a text | The knowledge and experience we have of life to help us understand what is being said ((Activating schemata). |
Listening for specific information | Sometimes when we listen, we only listen for the information that we need such as times or places etc. |
Predicting | We can predict what the speaker will say using Activating Schemata, together with visual clues such as when we see a picture of a cart, we assume we may hear the words “shopping, buying, or food”. |
Listening for gist | When we want to get a general understanding of a text such as when we want to know if the weather is good or bad in Lima. |
Listening for the details of a whole text | When we need to understand everything in a text such as when we listen to two stories and we want to decide which is the best. |
Identifying attitude and opinion (intonation patterns) | We have to pay attention to what words the speaker emphasizes as well as the adjectives and verbs he uses in the audio such as when we hear “I don’t like this food”, then we know the speaker expresses a negative feeling. |
