Vocab practice for lab and measurements in Chemistry
Term | Definition |

Chemistry | the study of matter, its properties, how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances, and how substances interact with energy. |
Hypothesis | "If I give a plant an unlimited amount of sunlight, then the plant will grow to its largest possible size." |
Qualitative Data | 5 meters, 10 meters, 20 meters |
Qualitative Data | Data collected that cannot be measured with numbers but merely observations. |
Unit | Grams, millilitres, cm2 |
Observation | the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information |
Dependent Variable | The result of an experiment which produces data for collection. |
Independent Variable | A student manipulates the amount of carbon dioxide a plant receives to determine the affect on growth. |
Control group | A group in an experiment that receives no treatment and is used as a comparison |
Digital balance | An instrument used to measure the amount of matter an object possesses |
Bunsen Burner | A student needs to heat up a piece of metal using a flame. |
Hot plate | A student needs to slowly heat up a beaker of water to 100 degrees Celsius. |
Graduated cylinder | Used to measure liquid volume with great precision and accuracy. |
Beaker | A student uses this to mix and store chemicals but does NOT want to use this to measure volume. |
Flask | A student wants to heat a liquid in a flat bottom container with a narrow neck which is easy to stop up. |
Goggles | Always wear this equipment to protect your eyes in lab. |
Apron | Always wear this equipment to protect your clothing in lab. |
