abrasion | The removal of one or more upper levels of skin due to being scraped or by the application of friction to the skin. The resulting wound can be painful since it exposes underlying tissue and nerves to air and foreign substances. |
abscess | An accumulation of pus within tissues of the body as a result of the body's defensive resistance against an infection. White blood cells surround the infection and create the accumulation of pus. Deep infections in the body can cause serious injury. |
acute | Sudden and relatively severe onset of a disease or disease symptoms that then subside within a short period of time. |
ambulatory | Ability to walk |
anaphylaxis | Extreme immune system response to an allergen that is rapid in onset and can potentially be fatal. |
anemia | Hemoglobin or red blood cells that are lower than normal. |
ankylosis | The fixation or immobility of a joint as a result of trauma, surgery, bone fusion, or disease. |
antagonist | Medication that counteracts the actions and properties of another. |
arrhythmia | Also known as an irregular heartbeat, it is the interruption of a heart rhythm. |
asymptomatic | Without symptoms. |

benign | A condition or abnormal growth that is treatable and not life-threatening. Opposite of malignant. |
biopsy | Removal of portion of tissue for further examination for diagnostic purposes. |
blood pressure | Measurement of the pressure of blood on the walls of the arteries dependent on the action of the heart. Measure when the heart contracts (systolic) over when the heart is filling with blood (diastolic) |
cardiovascular | Pertaining to the heart and blood vessels of the body |
ct (computer tomography) scan | X-rays taken from many angles of the body and arranged by the computer to give a three-dimensional picture of a structure. Also known as CAT (computerized axial tomography) scan. |
chondritis | Inflammation of cartilidge |
chronic | Slow progression of a condition that persists over a long period of time. Not acute in nature. |
compression | To apply pressure, either to reduce swelling, prevent further injury, or stop bleeding. |
dysphagia | Difficulty swallowing. |
dyspnea | Difficulty breathing or breathing that's labored. |

lymphoma | A cancer of specific white blood cells called lymphocytes. |
adenocarcinoma | A type of glandular cancer. EX: Breast Cancer |
lymphoadenopathy | Enlargement or swelling of the lymph nodes. |
thrompocytopenia | Low thrombocyte (platelet) count in the blood. |
hyperplasia | An increase in the volume of a tissue or organ caused by the growth of new cells. EX: Prostate Hyperplasia |
dysplasia | abnormal growth or development of an organ or tissue. |
cirrhosis | Late stage fibrosis of the liver. |
osteosclerosis | An increase in bone density. |
hypertrophy | An increase in the size of an organ or tissue caused by an increase in size of existing cells. EX: Muscle Hypertrophy |
atrophy | the degeneration or wasting away of tissue. EX: Muscle Atrophy |
