Ecosystems vocabulary 6th grade

TermDefinition
Abiotic Factors Non-living things in an ecosystem
Biotic factors living things in an ecosystem
Community (Comunidad) All the different populations that live together in an area
Consumer An organism that gets energy by eating other organisms
Decomposer organism that breaks down and obtains energy from dead plants and animals (returns nutrients to soil for producers)
Ecosystem A system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment
Food Chain series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food Web A community of organisms where there are several connected food chains
Organism (Organismo) A living thing (like plants or animals)
Population (PoblaciĆ³n) a particular group, section, or type of people or animals living in an area
Predator An animal that hunts other animals for food
Prey (Presa) An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
Producer an organism that makes its own food; an organism that does not consume other plants or animals; they provide energy for the rest of the ecosystem
Energy pyramid A model to show how much energy is transferred from one trophic (feeding) level to the next [10% rule]
Primary consumer eats producers (herbivores)
Secondary consumer primarily eats primary consumers (might eat plants too if they are omnivores)
Tertiary consumer eats other consumers; top of the food chain
Herbivore plant eater
Carnivore meat eater
Omnivore plant and meat eater
Biodiversity the variety of life in the world or in an ecosystem
Invasive Species Organisms that invade an area and multiply, harming native species.
Conservation the protection of things found in nature so they will be present in the future.
Competition A relationship where there is a struggle between organisms for the limited resources in an ecosystem
Mutualism A relationship between two organisms where they rely on and benefit from each other
Parasitic A relationship between two organisms where one benefits while the other is harmed
Resource anything needed to live, such as water, nutrients, light, food, or space
