Term | Definition |

Black | Obviously dead, little chance of survival, cardiac / respiratory arrest, severe head trauma |
Red | Life threatening injury Airway involved Uncontrolled bleeding Shock like Severe burns (around the face, involving the airway, large body area) Transport first! |
Yellow | Non – life threatening injury Transport can delay Bone injury Back injury (both with spinal cord and without spinal cord involved) Burns that don’t involve the airway Can wait for transport |
Green | Minor injury Minimal or no treatment Last to transport |
Nursing Students | can help during times of high volume |
Emergency doctrine | In emergencies, person may be unable to consent to care Treatment can be provided under the assumption that the patient would have consented if able |
Good Samaritan laws | Limit liability and provide protection against malpractice; do not protect the nurse in the event of gross negligence or willful misconduct |
Clothing | should stay in place as it can be evidence, can help identify the victim, or provide other information |
