Dental Embryology and Histology

TermDefinition
Proliferative Period - Implantation and enlargement of blastocyst - Duration: 0-2 weeks -Fertilization, implantation, and formation of embryonic disk
Embryonic Period - Duration: 2 - 8 weeks - Different types of tissue develop and organize - Organ systems are formed -Heart forms and beats by week 4 -Face and oral structures form weeks 4-7
Fetal Period - Embryo takes more of a human appearance week 8 - Duration: week 8 till birth - Tissues that were previously developed now enlarge, differentiate, and become capable of function
Somites - Paired, block like masses of mesoderm - Arranged segmentally along the neural tube in the embryo - Forming dermis, vertebral column, and musculature
Eight Functions of Cell 1. Absorption 2. Assimilation 3. Respiration 4. Irritability 5. Conductivity 6. Growth 7. Reproduction 8. Excretion
Frontonasal Process -Frontal area of prenatal development - Bilateral nasal placodes appear in the upper border of the lip - They develop into nostrils - During the fifth week
Medial Nesal Process - In week 6 - Also called Philtrum - Limited to the middle of the upper lip - creates a more human looking face
Lateral nasal process - The tissue lateral to the nasal pit - A ridge of tissue surrounds each pit, this one is lateral and can be confused for the medial nasal process
Mandibular process - Gives rise to the lower jaw - Seperated by mandibular notch
Maxillary Process - Lateral to the oral pit - A left and right maxillary process - Below the frontal process - Small wedge shaped tissue
Pharyngeal arch #3 Vessel - Role of supplying nutrients to the tissue of the first and second arches - Shifts blood supply to the face from internal carotid vessels to external carotid vessels - become constrictor muscles of the throat
