Dental Embryology Terminology
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Mitochondria | membrane-bound organelles that lie free in the cytoplasm and are present in all cells except RBC & keratinocytes; self-replicating and contain maternal DNA, the principle site of energy (ATP) generation in the cell |
Cell Nucleus | the master control center containing cell's DNA; nuclear envelope communicates with other structures; nucleolus produces cell's RNA; nuclear pores are openings to endoplasmic reticulum; in all except mature red blood cells and blood platelets |
Golgi Apparatus | help sort, condense, package, and deliver proteins arriving from the ER; composed of cisternae (flat plates) or saccules, small vescicles, and large vacuoles; release contents by exocytosis at cell surface |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | has ribosomes on it, which are small organelles whose function is to make proteins |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | synthesis of lipids, steroid hormones, the detoxication of harmful metabolic byproducts and the storage and metabolism of calcium ions within the cell |
