Bicameral | having two branches or chambers. |
Republic | a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. |
Ordinance | a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority. |
Depreciate | diminish in value over a period of time. |
Depression | a long and severe recession in an economy or market. |
Manumission | release from slavery. |
Proportional | corresponding in size or amount to something else. |
Compromise | an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. |
Federalism | the federal principle or system of government. |
Legislative Branch | having the power to make laws. |
Executive Branch | relating to managing an organization or political administration and putting into effect plans, policies, or laws. |
Electoral College | a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. |
Judicial Branch | of, by, or appropriate to a court or judge. |
Check and Balances | principle of government under which separate branches are empowered to prevent actions by other branches |
Amendment | a minor change or addition designed to improve a text, piece of legislation, etc. |
Federalist | a person who advocates or supports a system of government in which several states unite under a central authority. |
Anti-Federalist | was a late-18th century movement that opposed the creation of a stronger U.S. federal government |
