Oral Facial Embryology Terminology

TermDefinition
Frontonasal process -Frontal area after the birth week of prenatal development -Midline unpaired embryonic structure that develops into the forehead -Situated between telencephalon, stomodeum, and nasal pits
Medial nasal process -The area of the nose in the embryo -The tissue medial to the naris (close contact with the medial aspect of the maxillary process)
Lateral nasal process -The tissue lateral to the nasal pits -Located above maxillary process
Mandibular process -Forms the cheek after being developed by the mandibular arch that grows laterally to the oral pit
Pharyngeal arch #3 vessel -Becomes common carotid artery that supplies blood for face, neck, and brain from internal carotid artery -Circulation to the face and neck change to external carotid in week 7 -Internal continues to supply the brain
Maxillary Process -Grow laterally to the oral pit, developing mandibular process -Mandibular arch gave rise to two of these processes that later form cheeks, the zygomatic bones, hard palate and maxilla
