Oral Facial Embryology Terminology
Term | Definition |

Frontonasal process | -Frontal area after the birth week of prenatal development -Midline unpaired embryonic structure that develops into the forehead -Situated between telencephalon, stomodeum, and nasal pits |
Medial nasal process | -The area of the nose in the embryo -The tissue medial to the naris (close contact with the medial aspect of the maxillary process) |
Lateral nasal process | -The tissue lateral to the nasal pits -Located above maxillary process |
Mandibular process | -Forms the cheek after being developed by the mandibular arch that grows laterally to the oral pit |
Pharyngeal arch #3 vessel | -Becomes common carotid artery that supplies blood for face, neck, and brain from internal carotid artery -Circulation to the face and neck change to external carotid in week 7 -Internal continues to supply the brain |
Maxillary Process | -Grow laterally to the oral pit, developing mandibular process -Mandibular arch gave rise to two of these processes that later form cheeks, the zygomatic bones, hard palate and maxilla |
