Balance of Power | distribution of military and economic power that prevents any one nation from becoming too strong |
international boundary | a line that separates one state from another. Both sides usually have claims as to where the boundary should be located and it is rare to find an unattended boundary between two sovereign states |
internal boundary | type of boundary within a state, for administrative purposes or to mark off cultural regions |
defined boundary | boundary is created in agreement between two parties in a treaty or other legal document |
delimited boundary | is a line drawn on a map to show the limits of a space. |
demarcated boundary | A boundary demarcated (marked) by some visible means on the ground. Ex. wall posts, fences, etc. |
demilitarized zone | A zone from which military forces or operations or installations are prohibited |
maritime boundaries | boundaries in the world's oceans. |
United Nations Convention of the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) | a list of rules and regulations created by the UN in regards to which state owns the land in the sea and how far that land extends into the ocean or sea |
international waters | the areas of the sea that are not under the jurisdiction of any country. |
territorial seas | area extending up to 12 nautical miles from coast in which a state has sovereignty (including exclusive fishing rights.) |
Exclusive Economic Zone | area in which resources found up to 200 nautical miles offshore belong exclusively to the geographically bordering country |
voting district | generic term adopted by the Bureau of the Census to include the wide variety of small polling areas, such as election districts, precincts, or wards, that State and local governments create for the purpose of administering elections |
redistricting | The redrawing of congressional and other legislative district lines following the census, to accommodate population shifts and keep districts as equal as possible in population. |
gerrymandering | the drawing of legislative district boundaries to benefit a party, group, or incumbent |
federal state | An internal organization of a state that allocates most powers to units of local government. |
unitary state | An internal organization of a state that places most power in the hands of central government officials |
ethnic separatism | when an ethnic group desires to separate from the larger group |
ethnic cleansing | Process in which more powerful ethnic group forcibly removes a less powerful one in order to create an ethnically homogeneous region |
terrorism | Acts of violence designed to promote a specific ideology or agenda by creating panic among an enemy population |
irredentism | The policy of a state wishing to incorporate within itself territory inhabited by people who have ethnic or linguistic links with the country but that lies within a neighboring state. |
