Research questions

TermDefinition
Qualitative Research Systematic investigations that include inductive, in-depth, studies of individuals, groups, organizations, or communities; focuses on the why and how of decision making to better understand human behavior
Independent Variable This is a factor that can be varied or manipulated in an experiment.
Construct Validity The degree to which your research measures what it claims to measure.
. Quantitative Research Systematic investigations that include descriptive or inferential statistical analysis
Quasi-Experimental Research Systematic research inquiries made without complete controls / assignment to groups is nonrandom
Validity _In social research, the concept concerned with the extent to which a procedure is able to measure the quality it is intended to measure
Dependent Variable The phenomenon or reaction to be tested or measured when a new stimulus, condition, or treatment is introduced
External Validity The extent to which study findings can be generalized beyond the sample used in the study
Pretest A questionnaire or other data-gathering instrument administered to a subject just before a period of inquiry that provides a baseline for comparison with the end results
Experimental Study Research conducted under carefully controlled conditions, in which the subjects being investigated are randomly selected and systematically compared with control groups, with treatment variables being introduced to the experimental group but not the c
Single-Subject Design A research procedure often used in clinical situations to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention; The behavior of an individual client is used as a comparison and a control.
Inter-Rater Reliability The degree to which different people give similar scores for the same observations; refers to the consistency of a measure
Internal Validity The confidence that exists that the independent variable is the cause of the dependent variable and not extraneous factors

Null Hypothesis A statement that no relationship exists between study variables
Random Assignment The use of chance procedures in psychology experiments to ensure that each participant has the same opportunity to be assigned to any given group.
Experimental Group In research, a collection of subjects who are matched and compared with a control group in all relevant respects, except that they are also subject to a specific variable being tested
Content Validity Demonstrates that a test is relevant to and covers a given area of content. Spanish test covers everything taught in semester
Criterion Validity Does this test reflect a certain set of abilities. Do SAT scores predict post-secondary performance. Does the measure agree with outside measures.
Interobserver reliability Addresses the consistency among different raters feedback
Test-retest Measures the consistency of a test across time
Pre-experimental research Research that intervenes and measures (offer food vouchers to families then measure their happiness).
Algophobia the fear of pain
Haphephobia the fear of being touched
Delirium a state of confusion by hallucination, delusions, anxiety short term
Dysphoria condition of general unhappiness or pervasive discomfort
Thought insertion the delusion that the thoughts in ones mind are not one's own
Megalomania the obsession with dominating or having power over others
