AP Human Geography Unit 6 Cities and Urban Land Uses

Bid Rent Theory | Land closer to large cities cost more. The farther away from the city, the cheaper land is but the shipping cost is increased |
Urban Hearths | An area where large cities first existed, The 5 main urban hearths were Mesoamerica, Nile, Mesopotamia, Indus Valley & Huang Ho. |
Urbanization | The process of making an area more urban or city |
Settlement | an area or place where people have established a community |
Metro Area/Metropolitan Area | region with a dense population & urban core and surrounding smaller cities which share industry, infrastructure and housing. |
Borchert’s Model | Said there were 5 periods in history of American urbanization & each is characterized by the impact of a particular transport technology which affected differential rates of growth of American cities. |
Gravity Model | provides an estimate of the volume of flows of goods, services, or people between two or more locations. This could be the movement of people between cities or the volume of trade between countries. |
Megacities | a very large city, typically with a population of more than 10 million people |
Shanty Town | An area of town which is filled with crude dwellings from homeless persons who do not own the land |
Favelas | South American slums; areas that homeless people have built make-shift homes on land that does not belong to them. |
Barrios | An area of a city or community which is predominantly Hispanic |
Ghettos | areas where poorer people live. Low income area |
Suburb | an outlying part of a city or town; a smaller community next to a large city. |
Inner Cities | the area near the center of a city usually associated with social and economic problems (poor part of a city) |
Homelessness | Being without a home |
Eminent Domain | the right of a government to take private property for public use, as long as they pay for it |
Food Deserts | an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. |
Racial Segregation | separation of people into racial or ethnic groups in daily life. |
Blockbusting | the real estate practice of persuading white owners to sell property cheaply because of the fear of people of another race or class moving into the neighborhood, and thus profiting by reselling at a higher price. |
Public Transportation | buses, trains, subways, and other forms of transportation that charge set fares, run on fixed routes, and are available to the public: |
Counter-Urbanization | The movement from large cities to urban areas; occurs in more developed nations |
Third World Countries | Underdeveloped & developing countries of Asia, Africa & Latin America (Economically challenged countries) |
Squatter | Homeless person who builds temporary shelter on someone else's land or state owned land or someone who unlawfully is on someone else's property |
