Allegory definition a symbolic fictional narrative that conveys a meaning not explicitly set forth in the narrative.

Anaphora definition repetition of a word or expression at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for rhetorical or poetic effect
Anaphora example Every breath you take, Every move you make, Every bond you break, Every step you take, I'll be watching you
antecedent definition An earlier clause, phrase, or word to which a pronoun, noun, or another word refers.
Antecedent example While giving treats to children or friends offer them whatever they like.
Antimetabole Definition Repetition of words in reverse order
Antimetabole Example "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
Antithesis Definition a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else
Antithesis Example It was the best of times, it was the worst of times
Aphorism Definition short saying with a message
Aphorism Example If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Apostrophe Definition the act of speaking directly to an absent or imaginary person, or to some abstraction
Apostrophe Example "Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky."
Asyndeton Definition the omission or absence of a conjunction between parts of a sentence.
Asyndeton example On his return he received medals, honors, treasures, titles, fame.
Clause Definition a group of words with a subject and a verb
Clause Example I graduated last year.
Colloquial Definition used in ordinary or familiar conversation; not formal
