Term | Definition |

Additives | Chemicals designed to promote or prevent certain changes in the blood samples. |
Antiseptic | Agent used to clean living tissue. |
Bacteriostatic | Inhibits growth or reproduction of bacteria, but doesn't kill them. |
Butterfly | Used for venipuncture on small or fragile veins. |
Clot Activators | Promotes coagulation. |
Disinfectant | Agent used to clean surfaces other than living tissue. |
Gauge | Describes diameter of needle's lumen. |
Glycolysis | Cellular reaction used to harvest energy from glucose. |
Inpatients | Have been admitted into the hospital. |
Luer Adapter | Device that connects the syringe to the needle tightly. |
Lumen | Hollow tube within the shaft. |
Multisample Needle | Has retractable rubber sleeve that covers the second tip when not inserted into a tube. |
Needle Adapter | Translucent plastic cylinder that connects the needle to the tube. |
Order of Draw | Yellow, Light Blue, Red, Gold, Green, Lavender, Gray |
Outpatients | Usually come to you at phlebotomy station in clinic or hospital. |
Polymer Gel | An inert, synthetic substance with density that is between cells, blood serum or serum, forms barrier between the two layers. |

Tourniquet | Prevents venous flow out of the arm. |
Tube Advancement Mark | Shows how far the tube can be pushed in without losing vacuum. |
Tube Holder | Needle Adapter |
Whole Blood | Blood collected and mixed with anticoagulant so it wont clot. |
