Conditions
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is Type 1 Diabetes | A chronic condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin causing level of glucose to be too high - daily injections used |
What is Type 2 Diabetes | insufficient production of insulin, causing high blood sugar - diet and medications to control |
What is COPD | Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - Inflammation to the airways Emphysema - Damage to the air sacs Chronic Bronchitis - Long Term inflammation to airways |
what is Atherosclerosis | Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries. Atherosclerosis refers to the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on your artery walls (plaque), which can restrict blood flow |
What is Gout | Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, severe joint pain |
What is an IAPB and what does it do | An intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a type of therapeutic device. It helps your heart pump more blood. You may need it if your heart is unable to pump enough blood for your body. The IABP consists of a thin, flexible tube called a catheter. |
What is a TAVI | Transcatheter aortic valve implantation, less invasive procedure that is designed to replace a diseased aortic valve |
What is a pacemaker and what does it do? | A pacemaker is a small electrical device It's used to treat some arrhythmias that can cause your heart to either beat too slowly or miss beats. Some pacemakers can also help the chambers of your heart beat in time |
What is Angina | Angina is chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscles, Angina is usually caused by the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscles becoming narrowed by a build-up of fatty substances. |
What is AF | happens when electrical impulses fire off from different places in the atria in a disorganised way. These irregular impulses cause the atria to quiver or twitch. This causes as an irregular, and sometimes fast, heartbeat or pulse |
What is VF | Ventricular fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm in which the ventricles of the heart quiver instead of pumping normally. Ventricular fibrillation results in cardiac arrest with loss of consciousness and no pulse |
What is a CABG | coronary artery bypass grafting - is a type of surgery that improves blood flow to the heart, It diverts blood around narrowed or clogged parts of the major arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. |
What is Aortic Valve Stenosis | occurs when the heart's aortic valve narrows. This narrowing prevents the valve from opening fully, which reduces or blocks blood flow from your heart into the main artery to your body |
What is Asthma | Asthma is a long-term condition that affects your airways – the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs |
More About Asthma | The muscles around the walls of the airways tighten so that the airways become narrower. The lining of the airways becomes inflamed and starts to swell. Sticky mucus or phlegm sometimes builds up, which can narrow the airways even more. |
What is Hypertension | It means your blood pressure is consistently too high and means that your heart has to work harder to pump blood around your body. |
What causes high blood pressure | Diet, Smoking, overweight, too much salt - Kidneys, Low Potassium (as K+ relaxes blood vessels), Diabetes and medication |
What causes Hypotension | extremely low heart rate (bradycardia), heart valve problems, heart attack and heart failure, low blood sugar, dehydration, blood loss, infection |
Hyperkalemia | too much potassium in your blood can be caused by Acute Kidney Failure, Chronic Kidney Failure, type 1 diabetes, beta blockers |
What is acute kidney injury | happens when your kidneys suddenly lose the ability to eliminate excess salts, fluids, and waste materials from the blood The condition will also cause electrolytes and waste material to accumulate in your body |
What is Arthritis | Wear and tear of the joints, can cause pain and inflammation which can restrict movement |
What is Coronary Heart Disease | is what happens when fatty substances build up in the arteries, blocking the blood supply to the heart |
What is Dementia | Dementia is a syndrome (a group of related symptoms) associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. |
What causes Alzheimer's | Alzheimer's disease is thought to be caused by the abnormal build-up of 2 proteins called amyloid and tau. |
What causes Vascular Dementia | Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, which damages and eventually kills brain cells |
What is Epilepsy? | Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain that causes seizures |
What causes Epilepsy? | Brain Damage from stroke, head injury or infection can be genetic factors |
What is Osteoporosis | A condition that weakens the bones |
What causes a stroke? | A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die in minutes |
What is Cystic Fibrosis | is an inherited condition that causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system |
What is crohns disease | lifelong condition where parts of the digestive system become inflamed. |
