Term | Definition |

Apex | Blunt point, or lower edge of the heart |
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) | combined external heart massage and artificial respiration |
Atria | Two upper heart chambers (Atrium) Receiving chambers |
Ventricles | Two lower heart chambers, Discharging chambers |
Auricle | Ear like appendage of each atrium of the heart |
Myocardium | Inside muscle of the heart |
Endocardium | Thin layer of very smooth tissue lining each chamber of the heart |
Endocarditis | Inflammation of the lining of the heart |
Thrombus | Stationary blood clot |
Pericardium | Membrane that surrounds the heart consists of 2 layers |
Visceral pericardium or Epicardium | Inner layer covers the heart the way skin covers an apple |
Parietal Pericardium | Outer layer (fits around the heart like a loose fitting sack allowing room for the heart to beat) |
Pericarditis | Inflammation of the Pericardium |
Systole | Contraction |
Diastole | Relaxation |
Bicuspid or Mitral Valve | Located between the left atrium and ventricle |
Tricuspid Valve | Located between the right atrium and ventricle |
Semilunar Valves (SL) | located between each ventricular chamber |
Pulmonary SL Valve | Valve located at the beginning of the pulmonary artery |
Aortic SL Valve | valve between the aorta and left ventricle that prevents backflow into ventricle |
Superior Vena Cava | One of 2 large veins returning deoxygenated blood to right atrium |
Inferior Vena Cava | One of 2 large veins returning blood into right atrium |
Pulmonary Artery | Artery that carries deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to lungs |
Pulmonary Veins | Any vein that carries oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium |
