Term | Definition |

Atman | The Soul. It is a person’s connection to Brahman. |
Avatar | When a god appears on earth in a different form. Particularly relevant to Vishnu. |
Brahman | Hindu name for the Great Power or Ultimate/Universal Spirit. |
Caste System | Society broken up into different groups or levels. Priests, Warriors, Merchants, Peasants and Untouchables |
Dharma | A person’s Duty or also Religious Law. Depending on your caste your duty is different. |
Guru | A Spiritual Teacher who is considered to be a divine manifestation of a god. |
Karma | Good or bad deeds or acts in a person’s previous or present life which will determine the quality of the next incarnation or life. |
Mandir | The name for a Hindu Temple or place of worship. A house for the gods to live. |
Murti | Images of the gods. When praying to a Murti, Hindus believe the gods come and inhabit the image/statue |
Puja | Forms of worship in which a deity is honored by offerings of flowers, incense, food or other symbols relevant to that deity. |
Moksha | Release from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth (samsara). Also referred to as enlightenment. |
Reincarnation | Belief that the soul is reborn after death into a new body. |
Sanskrit | The ancient language of India. The Vedas and the Upanishads are written in Sanskrit. |
Samsara | The continual cycle of life, death and rebirth. The soul is reborn many times through different lifetimes until it is released. |
Sanatana Dharma | Eternal Truth. The Indian name for Hinduism. |
The Vedas | The oldest of the Hindu sacred Texts. It teaches proper rituals and acts of worship. It contains thousands of Hymns. There are four Vedas altogether, the oldest and most well-known is the Rig Veda. |
Upanishads | Also a sacred Hindu text. It means, sitting near. It teaches of ones duty or Dharma, and of Samsara, Karma, and Moksha. |
Brahma | The Creator god. One of the three main gods of the Hindu Trimurti. He has four heads and holds a scroll representing the Vedas, prayer beads and a jar and ladle. |
Vishnu | The Protector of the Universe. One of the three main gods of the Hindu Trimurti. Often has blue skin, holds a conch shell, a discuss and a lotus flower in his hands. He restores balance to the universe. |
Shiva | The destroyer of evil in the Universe, also known as Lord of the dance. One of the three main gods of the Hindu Trimurti. He has a third eye in the middle of his forehead. He holds a trident, drum and has snakes around his arms or neck. |
Ganesha | Remover of obstacles. Has an elephant head. The son of Shiva. Hindu's pray to Ganesha before their personal gods in order for him to remove any obstacles. |
Hinduism | The third largest world religion which began in India through the merging together of many beliefs and cultures. |
