Spatial Technologies

Another Geographical Concept To Revise Before Your Exam!

QuestionAnswer
What are spatial technologies? Technologies that allow the collection, management and analysis of spatial information that refer to a place, space or location from the Earth's surface.
Why do we need spatial technologies? To analyse spatial data, create visual representations and make predictions in fields as wide ranging as urban planning, disaster management, agricultural production and climate change.
Explain how utilising spatial technologies assists in detecting an abnormal weather hazard. Spatial technologies record the relative geographic information about the earth and its features. A pair of latitude and longitude coordinates defines a specific location on earth. The abnormal weather hazard can thus be detected with the given data.
List examples of spatial technologies. (GPS), Google Earth, (GIS) and satellite images.
Define GPS. The Global Positioning System is a system of 30+ satellites circling the Earth. This technology listens for these signals. So once the receiver calculates its distance from four or more GPS satellites, it can figure out where the individual is.
Define GIS. The Geographic Information Systems is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes.
What is the difference between GPS and GIS? GPS is used to find the exact location of things. GPS is used to find the exact location of things. GIS is used to record information onto maps.
