Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is an energy resource? | Produces heat and makes electricity |
What does non-renewable mean? | Can only be used once and will run out eventually |
What does renewable mean? | Can be used repeatedly and won't run out if used carefully |
List 5 renewable resources | -Solar -Hydroelectric -Biomass -Wind -Geothermal |
List 5 non-renewable resources | -Oil -Gas -Peat -Coal -Nuclear |
Environmental impacts of oil extraction | High C02 emissions |
Economic impacts of oil extraction | Provides lots of jobs and brings a lot of money into the economy but a fall in the price of oil could cause a rise in unemployment |
Social impacts of oil extraction | -High standard of living -Modern schools, hospitals and other services |
Consequences of non-renewable energy? | Acid rain |
What is acid rain? | Acid rain is a consequence of when acidic gases are released into the atmosphere and the gases dissolve into the rain water to form acid rain |
How is acid rain harmful to the environment? | Acid rain: -Kills wildlife -Pollutes rivers -Erodes stonework |
What is solar energy? | Solar energy uses the suns heat and light and converts it to energy |
Advantages of solar energy | -Renewable -No waste product -Technology is cheap and easy to install |
Disadvantages of solar energy | -Not possible at night -Weather dependent |
Environmental impacts of solar energy | -Eliminate the use of oil/gas boiler -Lowers C02 emissions -Generates clean energy |
Economic impacts of solar energy | -Can lower electricity bills -Create employment |
What is wind power? | Wind power is the use of airflow through wind turbines to power generators to create eletricity |
What is geothermal energy? | Geothermal energy is heat energy generated and stored by the earth |
What is biomass energy? | Biomass energy is the burning of waste wood or vegetable products |
