CHEM Acids and Bases

Acids and Bases Vocab CHEM

TermDefinition
Acid A substance that increases the amount of hydrogen ions (H+) in an aqueous solution H+ > OH-
Base A substance that increases the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) in aqueous solution OH- > H+
pH The "power of the hydrogen ion" . pH= (log H+)(-1)
Neutral A solution in which the H+ = OH- The pH = 7
pOH pOH = (log OH-) (-1)
Self-Ionization of Water A process in which a water molecule breaks apart into ions HOH --> H+ and OH-
Neutralization The reaction of an acid with a base, producing water and a salt
Acid-Base Indicator A substance whose color changes when the pH changes
Titration A lab procedure that allows you to determine the molarity of an unknown acid or an unknown base using a neutralization reaction
hydroxide ion OH-
hydrogen ion H+
salt any ionic compound (example: KBr, NaF, KNO3)
hydronium ion When a hydrogen ion (H+) joins up with a water molecule (H2O) it forms hydronium (H3O+)
ionization when an ionic substance is put into water and it breaks apart into ions (example: KBr --> K+ and Br- )
Molarity the number of moles of a substance dissolved in 1 liter of solution
Volume the amount of substance, measured in liters (L) or milliliters (mL)
dissociation when an ionic compound is pulled apart by water molecules, forming individual ions (with charges)
phenolphthalein an indicator that is colorless when in an acid and pink when in a base

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
