Bulla | circumscribed, elevated, >5mm, contains serous fluid, Blister looking |
Lobule | tori segmented or lobe that is part of a whole, sometimes appears fused together, lobulated |
Macule | usually has color differential, does NOT protrude above surface, flat, dark |
Papule | circumscribed, >1cm, elevated or protrudes from the surface |
Pedunculated | stem-like or stalk-like, mushroom |
Sessile | base of lesion the is flat or broad |
Vesicle | small, elevated, contains serious fluid (cold sores) |
Fordyce Granules | slightly enlarged oil glands that are commonly found on your lips, inside your cheeks |
Exostosis | extra growth of bone that extends outward from an existing bone |
Ankyloglossia | tongue-tie, is a congenital oral anomaly that may decrease the mobility of the tongue tip and is caused by an unusually short, thick lingual frenulum |
Median Rhomboids Glossitis | smooth, red, flat or raised nodular area on the dorsum of the middle or back of the tongue |
Linea Alba | - chronic irritation of the teeth against the buccal mucosa along the plane of occlusion and is considered as a frictional keratosis - causes include orthodontic appliances, frictions of the dentures, uneven teeth, and aggressive oral hygiene |
Leukoplakia | "white plaque - like" - white lesion that cannot be rubbed off - most results in hyperkeratosis - 5-20% is epithelial dysplasia considered to be pre cancerous - basil and epithelium cells separate |
Hyperkeratosis | thickening of the keratin layer |
Nicotine Stomatitis | common in cigar and pipe or heavy cig. smokers - develops in response to heat, can be caused by chronic use of very hot liquids - becomes fibrotic (white to gray) with red papules - found on palate - reversible with discontinuation of habit |
Geographic Tongue | condition that causes a map-like pattern to appear on the tongue. Appears smooth, reddish patches surrounded by white borders on dorsal surface of the tongue. Missing papillae that naturally appear on the surface of the tongue. |
Apthous Ulcers | painful, ulcerative, varies on size, occurs from trauma, dietary, out of blue, sickness |
Hairy Tongue | abnormal coating on the dorsal surface of the tongue |
Denture Sore | dentures are not properly cleaned or maintained, bacteria can build up causing yeast to form under dentures, causing sores |
Mucocele | benign, mucus-containing cystic lesion of the minor salivary gland |
Ranula | mucocele-like lesion on the floor of the mouth, association with ducts of the sublingual and submandibular salivary glands. Lateral to midline. caused by salivary duct obstruction |
Gingival Cyst | appears as a small bulge or swelling of the attached gingival or interdental papilla often found in canine and premolar area |
Cysts | preliminary diagnosis of a cystic lesion abnormal pathological sac/cavity lined by epithelium and enclosed in a connective tissue capsule |
Papilloma | tumor of the skin or mucous membrane with finger-like projections |
Fibroma | benign, tumor-like growth made up mostly of fibrous or connective tissue. Develop when uncontrolled cell growth occurs for an unknown reason, or as a result of injury or local irritation |
Granulomas | small area of inflammation |
Tumors | swelling |
Hemangioma | bright red birthmark that shows up at birth or in the first or second week of life. Made up of extra blood vessels in the skin. Commonly appears on the face, scalp, chest or back |
Significant Trauma (Bite Mark, Burns, more than 2mm) | bite marks or burns that are more than 2mm |
Lichen Planus | Benign, chronic disease affecting the skin and oral mucosa. Pattern of interconnecting lines (Wickman's striae) resembles lichens on a rock. Lace-like - distinct white boarder with red/purple inside. |
White Lesions | thickening of one or several layers of the oral epithelium. Varies in size and depth, generally have an irregular outline. Common on buccal mucosa, lateral border of the tongue, floor of the mouth, and hard palate |
Petechiae | minute red spot on the skin or mucosal membranes resulting from escape of a small amount of blood |
Angular Cheilosis | inflammation of one or both corners of the mouth. Corners are red with skin breakdown and crusting. It can also be itchy or painful |
Defined Vermillion Boarder | normally sharp demarcation between the lip and the adjacent normal skin |
Deviate Swallowing | tongue moves forward and/or sideways in an exaggerated way during speech and/or swallowing |
