What is hydraulic action? power of moving water as it crashes against coast
What is abrasion? waves pick up stones which are thrown against coast
What is compressed air? air in rocks becomes trapped by incoming waves - trapped air puts pressure on rocks - when water retreats, air expands and pressure drops - repeated compression and release shatters rocks
What is attrition? stones carried by waves hit off each other - become smooth and rounded
What is solution? certain minerals are dissolved in water
What are the features of sea erosion? -headlands and bays - sea cliff -sea cave -sea arch -sea stack -sea stump -blowhole
What is longshore drift? -sea transportation -material carried by sea (load) is transported up shore by forces of incoming waves (swash) -carried back down by retreating waves (backwash) -material moved in zigzag pattern along shore
What are the features of sea deposition? -beach -sand dunes -sand spit -sand bar -tombolo
What are coastal defense methods? -groynes -sea walls -gabions -rock armour
