chemical change | Describes how a substance reacts when it interacts with other substances. |
extensive property | Property that depends on the AMOUNT of substance present. |
intensive property | Property that is the same regardless of the amount of substance present. |
matter | Anything that has mass and volume |
physical change | Change that does not involve a change in composition. |
physical property | Characteristic of matter that can be observed and measured without changing the chemical identity of the sample. |
pure substance | Matter that has a definite and constant composition |
atom | The smallest unit that retains the properties of an element. |
electron | Negatively charged subatomic particle, located outside the nucleus. |
element | A pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by chemical processes. |
ion | An atom with a positive or negative charge. Occurs when the number of protons and electrons are different. |
mass number | The sum of protons plus neutrons in an atom |
neutron | Subatomic particle with no charge, located in the nucleus. |
proton | Subatomic particle with a positive charge, located in the nucleus. |
atom | The basic unit of a chemical element. |
crystal | Ordered 3-dimensional arrangement of ions |
molecule | A group of atoms bonded together |
polymer | Substance composed of long chain of repeating units. |
