Radiation | loss of heat via exposure to a cold enviroment |
conduction | transfer of heat from one object to another |
convection | loss of heat to air currents |
evaporation | heat loss as water is transformed to gas |
Normal Pulse Rate | 60-100 beats per minute for an adult |
Tachycardia | 100+ beats per minute pulse rate for adult |
bradycardia | below 60 beats per minute rate for an adult |
Internal Respiration | the use of oxygen, the production of carbon dioxide, and the exchange of O2 and CO2 between the cells and the blood |
External Respiration | taking O2 into the body and eliminating CO2 from the body |
Normal Respiration Rate | 12-20 breaths for adults 30-60 for infants |
Tachypnea | breath rate above 20 for adults |
Bradypnea | breath rate below 12 for adults |
Apnea | absence of respiration |
Dyspnea | respirations that require excessive effort |
Eupnea | normal breathing rythym and depth |
Biot’s – Ataxic breathing | shallow breathing with periods of apnea |
Cheyne-Stokes | increase breathing with periods of apnea |
Kussmaul | increased rate (above 20) & depth of breathing |
blood pressure | Force that blood exerts against the walls of the blood vessels |
systole | contraction of the heart muscles, especially the ventricles |
diastole | after the contraction of the heart muscle…when the chambers are filling back up with blood |
pulse pressure | the difference between systolic and diastolic |
stroke volume | the amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle |
cardiac output | Stroke Volume xHeart Rate = output of blood by the heart per 1 minute…average 5.5 L/min |
average caridac output | 5.5 L/min |
normal blood pressure | 100/60-120/80 blood pressure |
Prehypertension | 120/80 - 139/89 blood pressure |
Hypertension | greater than 140/90 blood pressure |
hypotension | less than 100/60 blood pressure |
oxygen saturation | amount of axygen in your blood |
oxygen saturation normal reading | 95% or greater amount of oxygen in you |
oxygen saturation abnormal reading | 93% or below amount of oxygen in you |
